Variable-Speed Pump Savings: What the Numbers Actually Look Like
A single-speed pump runs at one speed whether the job calls for it or not; a variable-speed pump matches speed to the task, which is where the savings come from. A higher water table near the coast affects how excavation and dewatering are handled during a gunite pour, which is accounted for in the construction plan rather than treated as a surprise once digging starts.

Why Lower Speed Saves More Than It Seems
Pump energy use follows roughly the cube of its speed: running at half speed uses roughly an eighth of the power, not half. Most filtration tasks (routine circulation, running a cleaner, low-demand chemical mixing) do not need full speed, so a variable-speed pump can run slower for most of the day and only ramp up for tasks that need the flow, like a water feature or a vacuum.
A single-speed pump has no such option; it runs at one speed for every task, which means it is often working harder than the job requires most of the time it runs.
What Realistic Payback Looks Like
Variable-speed pumps cost more upfront than single-speed pumps, but most residential installations recover that difference in energy savings within roughly 1-3 years, depending on local electricity rates and how many hours a day the pump runs, which in the Houston area, with a year-round swim season, tends to be a meaningful number of hours.
Beyond energy cost, variable-speed pumps also tend to run quieter and put less wear-and-tear strain on plumbing fittings at lower speeds, which is a secondary but real benefit.
